The stone steps climb above the black beach through warm mist. They lead to a series of terraces carved into the cavern wall, each holding a shallow pool fed by clear mineral water seeping from narrow channels in the rock. The lowest pools are almost body-warm and edged with dark stone benches. Higher ones grow hotter, steaming in the cavern air. Mineral deposits have built pale rims around them in cream, rose, and faint green, making the terraces look half natural and half deliberately tended. The stair to the right ends at a narrow overlook above the sea. The long rectangular pool ahead sits beneath an overhang where drops of cold water fall into the steam. A short passage to the left beside the hottest pool is only a changing alcove cut into the rock. These are parts of the terrace complex, not onward routes. Someone has stacked six smooth black stones beside one basin. A seventh lies alone several feet away near the edge of the terrace. From this height, the distant gold lights across the underground sea appear to form a straight line far too precise to be campfires.
