The shallow river behind the arrival shore is warm at the ankles and clear over black pebbles. It emerges from a broad arch in the cavern wall, carrying bits of pale leaf, tiny translucent shrimp, and occasional ribbons of green light that dissolve when lifted from the water. Following it upstream, the ceiling lowers gradually until the immense sea cavern is hidden behind bends in the rock. The air becomes wetter and more fragrant. Moss thickens along the banks. Small ferns grow from cracks wherever mineral-rich water drips. Ahead, the river divides around a stone island supporting a single enormous tree with white bark and dark glossy leaves. Its roots enter the water on all sides. The deeper branch to the left disappears beneath hanging roots too dense to pass comfortably, while the shallow channel to the right narrows around a mossy wall until there is no standing route. The island itself is the practical end of the public river walk. The tree bears no fruit, but several branches hold empty woven baskets suspended by cords. One basket contains a folded dry towel. Farther upstream, beyond the roots, something knocks twice against wood and then waits.
