A pair of narrow brass elevator doors set directly into the limestone wall, their surfaces softly tarnished except where countless imagined hands might have polished the edges. Above them is a semicircular indicator with no numbers, only a single black needle resting slightly left of center. There is one round call button in a porcelain mount. It does not light when pressed. The doors sometimes give off a faint warmth, followed by the muted vibration of machinery moving somewhere impossibly far above or below. Very close to the seam, the air carries faint smells of beeswax, old carpet, polished wood, coffee, and salt air.
