The doors open onto the upper lobby of an old hotel built into a sea cliff. Tall arched windows occupy the entire outer wall, revealing an ocean hundreds of feet below and a horizon washed pale by late afternoon. Waves strike the cliff in white bursts so far beneath that their sound arrives softened and delayed. The lobby is high-ceilinged and quiet, with patterned rugs, dark wood paneling, brass lamps, potted palms, and deep chairs arranged around low tables. A broad staircase descends through the center toward lower terraces. A cage elevator of polished wood and brass rises through the opposite wall, its indicator moving slowly between floors with no visible passengers. Ahead, glass doors open onto a wide terrace cantilevered above the sea. To the left, a long gallery leads past reading rooms and a library whose windows face inland toward mountains. To the right, a tiled corridor curves toward the sound of water and a faint scent of chlorine and eucalyptus. Behind, the lobby continues through an archway into a dining room and bar where white tablecloths are already laid for evening. At the reception desk, an open guest book contains names in many hands. Every room number is legible. Every guest name has faded just enough to resist reading.
