Place record · #603

the painted paper door

A light wooden door faced with layers of painted paper beneath a clear protective coating. The design is faded and crowded: lantern shapes, dark water, narrow roofs, gold lines, red brushstrokes, tiny figures whose faces have been worn away by time. A simple black handle has been wrapped in braided cord. The door is almost weightless when touched. Warm air occasionally leaks around its edges carrying the smells of grilled spices, citrus smoke, river water, incense, and sugar. Very faintly, there is noise on the other side—not one sound but many: conversation, laughter, bowls touching, a stringed instrument, and someone calling something unintelligible from a distance.
