Night presses close around a river district bright with lanterns. Narrow buildings lean over stone streets and wooden balconies. Red, gold, green, and blue lights hang in rows beneath eaves and across alleys, reflected everywhere in rain-dark paving and the black surface of the river nearby. Unlike the other destinations, this place is plainly alive. People move through the streets in loose evening crowds: couples sharing skewers from paper trays, children chasing one another beneath lantern strings, vendors leaning over steaming pots, musicians tuning instruments under awnings. Their clothing varies too widely to belong to a single period or place, yet nobody seems surprised by anyone else. Ahead, the main market street runs between food stalls and tiny shops toward a brightly lit square crowded around a low stage. To the left, stone steps descend to the river where narrow boats wait beneath lanterns. To the right, a stair climbs between buildings toward rooftop terraces threaded with lights and music. Behind, a quieter lane slips away from the market toward tea rooms, courtyards, and a row of little workshops still open late. No one stops to explain where you are. A passing vendor offers a paper cone of something hot and fragrant, waits exactly long enough for a decision, then grins and moves on. Somewhere nearby, a bell rings three times and the whole street cheers for reasons that remain completely unclear.
