Up a narrow stair from the coffeehouse, through a roof hatch that sticks slightly in damp weather. A small dark room under an opening roof. For now there is one chair, a ledge, and a clear place where a telescope ought to go. No telescope yet. No grand program either. The sky, whatever the City means by sky, is allowed to arrive before the equipment does. Residents may come up with coffee, look, speculate, be wrong about constellations, or simply sit in the dark. The proprietor has apparently built an observatory before acquiring an instrument, which feels consistent.
