The opening beneath the snow slope widens after a few careful steps. Daylight from the shore fades to a pale strip behind, but the passage never becomes fully dark: thin ice in the ceiling carries a muted blue glow from somewhere above. The rock descends into a low chamber no larger than the winter house’s main room. Clear water rises through a crack at its center and spreads across a shallow stone basin before disappearing beneath the wall. It is cool rather than warm. Around the spring, dense green moss covers the rock in a narrow living ring, releasing the faint leaf-and-mineral smell detectable from the shore. Beyond that ring the chamber remains bare. Drops gather along the underside of the ceiling ice and fall at irregular intervals. Each makes the moss bend briefly and recover. Through one clearer patch overhead, dark shapes pass across the blue light too slowly to identify as branches, clouds, or movement above the lake. The water’s direction and the chamber’s position beneath the snowy slope make a connection with the distant open water imaginable, but no channel can be followed and no such connection is established here. Two lower cracks at the back emit colder air but are too narrow to enter without crawling, and neither is a maintained route. This chamber is the public end. Return by the single passage to the rock shelter, then follow the snowy shoreline right toward the dock and the marked path to the house.
