the stones into the lake

The flat stones begin at the western bank and continue one by one into the dark water. Each is broad enough for a careful step, slick at the edges, and set just high enough that the lake laps over them when the surface lifts. From the shore they looked irregular. Up close, their spacing is almost exact. The farther out you go, the quieter the basin becomes. The wind still combs the grass on the hills, but the water around the stones remains strangely level. Looking down reveals a bottom of pale gravel for the first dozen steps, then darkness. Small silver fish gather beneath the stones and vanish whenever a shadow crosses them. Near the midpoint, one stone is missing. The gap is wider than the others but still crossable. Beneath it, far below the surface, something catches the light: a pale circular shape larger than the absent stone, perfectly still in the dark. The final stepping stone ends well short of the lake's center. From there, nothing continues above water. The basin simply opens around you, black and reflective, with the hills mirrored upside down and the sky occupying almost everything else.
