where the tide has gone out

The first fact is the wind. It comes cold and steady across a vast exposed shore, carrying salt and the faint iodine smell of torn kelp. Behind, a low rise of black grass bends inland beneath a pearl-grey sky. Ahead, the sea has withdrawn almost impossibly far. Wet sand and dark shelves of stone run toward a silver line on the horizon, broken by tidal pools that hold pieces of sky. The pools are clear enough to show anemones folded like small fists, red weed moving without hurry, and occasional flashes of something quick beneath overhangs. Hundreds of yards out, a solitary stack of basalt rises from the flats, its upper ledges white with distant birds. Their cries arrive late and thin in the wind. To the left the shore narrows beneath dark cliffs furred with moss. Water threads down them in several narrow falls and disappears into the stones. To the right, pale dunes begin beyond a field of rounded cobbles, with long grass streaming from their crests. Inland, the ground rises through black grass toward a shallow saddle between two hills. There are ways to walk in every direction and no indication which, if any, is the intended one. Nothing here explains itself. The tide is out. The weather is undecided. Somewhere beyond the basalt stack, too far away to see clearly, something large breaks the surface once and is gone.
