the warm bakery

The bakery door opens with a small brass bell and a wash of heat carrying butter, yeast, coffee, and orange peel. The room is narrow, tiled in cream and dark green, with a marble counter running along one wall and wooden shelves behind it. Nothing is freshly moving, but nothing looks abandoned either. Several loaves sit beneath linen cloths. Small pastries glazed with apricot are arranged on a tray beside darker spirals dusted with sugar. One space on the tray is empty. A pot of coffee rests on a black iron warmer, still hot enough to send a faint thread of steam from its spout. There is no till. A shallow wooden bowl beside the counter contains a few mixed coins, a blue button, two smooth pebbles, and a folded paper star. On the wall above it, a chalkboard bears three lines of writing in the same almost-readable script seen outside. The prices, if that is what they are, change subtly depending on how long one looks. At the back of the shop, a bead curtain marks the private preparation area rather than a public route. Through it are floury worktables, copper pans, and an open transom window looking into a tiny courtyard where rainwater drips from a fig tree into a stone basin.
