the arcade after rain

A long covered arcade stretches beneath a roof of iron ribs and old glass, every pane stippled with rain. The storm itself seems to have just passed. Water ticks from gutters into narrow channels along the paving stones, and the whole passage smells of wet limestone, coffee, polished wood, and the faint electrical warmth of lamps. The buildings on either side are four and five stories high, their lower fronts occupied by small shops with darkened windows and hand-painted signs in an alphabet that looks familiar until read. Above them, apartments show curtains, plants, bookshelves, occasional pools of amber light. No voices carry from within. A bakery halfway down the arcade is lit. Its front window has fogged from inside, and behind the glass sit several dark loaves, small glazed pastries, and a tray with one empty space. A brass bell hangs over the closed door. Farther on, the arcade opens into a broad square where a clock tower is visible above the roofs, though its face cannot be read from here. To one side, a narrow lane slopes down between buildings toward the sound of moving water. To the other, a tiled stair climbs toward an upper gallery beneath the glass roof. Behind, the arcade continues around a shallow bend beneath hanging lamps, each one reflected in the wet stone. There is no urgency anywhere. The rain has finished. The city has not.
