the dining car at night

The dining car is brighter than the corridor but no less quiet. Small shaded lamps stand on white-clothed tables, each pool of light reflected in the dark windows. Brass luggage racks curve overhead. The upholstery is deep red, worn smooth at the aisle corners. Several tables are set for one or two people: heavy silverware, water glasses, folded napkins. One table near the middle holds a cup of black coffee still warm, a saucer with a curl of orange peel, and an open book facedown beside it. The book's cover is blank cloth. Its pages are printed in columns of dense text that remain legible only when not looked at directly. At the far end, a narrow service counter contains a polished kettle, small cups, jars of tea, slices of dark cake beneath a glass dome, and a bowl of pears. No attendant appears. A handwritten card rests beside the kettle. Whatever language it uses, the meaning feels unusually easy: PLEASE LEAVE ENOUGH FOR THE NEXT PERSON. Outside the windows, the train crosses a high viaduct. Far below, a valley is filled with scattered lights. For a few moments they form constellations against the ground, then the train curves and they become merely houses again.
