the observation car

The warmer light at the end of the corridor comes from an observation car paneled almost entirely in glass. Curved windows wrap the rear and sides, framed by dark wood and brass. Low chairs face outward rather than inward. A small stove glows in one corner, giving the room a dry warmth and the faint smell of coal. Here the train's motion becomes visible. The rails stream away behind in two silver lines before being swallowed by darkness. The landscape changes gradually and then all at once: forest gives way to open snowfield, snowfield to black rock under stars, black rock to a coast where moonlight lies across the sea like beaten metal. On a narrow shelf beneath the rear window rests a stack of postcards. Each shows a different landscape the train has passed: a yellow desert under storm clouds, a city of white towers beside green water, an orchard in winter, a bridge crossing nothing but fog. None has writing on the back. One card at the bottom shows the observation car itself from outside, moving through a landscape of tall red grass under a sky with two moons. The train has not yet passed that place.
