The pale bridge runs above two descending garden terraces, its parapets low enough to lean on. Below, narrow water channels divide beds of herbs, broad leaves, white flowers, and low trees trained along dark trellises. Warm air rises from the lower levels carrying rosemary, wet stone, and the sweet-bitter smell of citrus rind. Ahead, the bridge enters a grove of small trees heavy with fruit in shades from deep green to orange-gold. Some resemble oranges or mandarins until seen closely: their skins are faintly translucent, and pale threads of light move slowly beneath the surface like veins. The grove is arranged around a circular platform of dark wood. A long table stands there beneath hanging lamps, set with ceramic bowls and narrow glasses. Nothing is served except a shallow dish containing six pieces of fruit, each cut open to reveal a spiral of pearl-white segments around a dark red center. From the platform, one path continues forward through the trees toward a brighter opening. Another turns right and climbs a narrow stair to a catwalk running just beneath the glass roof. A third slips left between hedges toward the sound of quiet conversation that stops whenever the leaves move.
