Warm white stone underfoot. High above, an immense curved roof of glass spans from horizon to horizon, crossed by slender ribs that catch the light. Beyond the glass is not weather but darkness: stars, a slow band of pale dust, and the blue-white crescent of a planet so large that its curvature fills much of the view. The interior is a garden built at impossible scale. Terraces step downward through citrus trees, broad-leaved plants, palms, flowering vines, and shallow channels of clear water. The air is warm without being humid. Somewhere, hidden fans or vents move the leaves just enough to keep the place from feeling sealed. Ahead, a long bridge of pale stone crosses above the lower gardens toward a grove bright with orange and gold fruit. To the left, broad stairs descend toward the sound of falling water and a cluster of low pools. To the right, a narrower path rises through dense ferns toward a high glass wall where the stars appear almost close enough to touch. Behind, a colonnade runs along the upper level through quiet seating alcoves and dark polished doors set between the columns. There are no people in sight. Several chairs have been pulled slightly away from tables, as though recently used. A glass of water sits on a ledge with three beads of condensation sliding down its side. Every few minutes, a faint tremor passes through the floor. The leaves barely move. The stars do.
