The steps rise to a narrow loading platform beside the wheel. A cream-painted car settles into place with a soft pneumatic sigh and its glass door folds open. Inside are two padded benches, a brass handrail, and a small round table bolted between them. There are no controls. Once aboard, the wheel carries the car upward with almost insulting gentleness. The boardwalk shrinks below into lines of bulbs and colored rectangles. The sea widens. At halfway height, the coast becomes visible in both directions, curving farther than expected beneath the blue evening. Near the top, the music from below fades completely. When the wheel reaches its highest point, it stops. For several seconds the entire amusement pier goes dark. The sea does not. Thousands of pale green lights are moving beneath the surface in long slow bands, far beyond the pier and all along the coast. They are too coordinated to be reflections and too numerous to be boats. From above, several bands curve into enormous loops before dissolving. Then the boardwalk lights return, the wheel starts again, and the green patterns become almost impossible to see from the descending car.
