The jetty is made from dark timber polished by moisture and use. Its lamp burns with a steady yellow flame inside thick glass. Three narrow boats are tied along the outer edge, each built from pale wood and fitted with two oars, a folded blanket, and a small covered lantern. The water beside the dock is clear enough to show silver fish moving between the pilings. Farther out it becomes black almost immediately. One boat contains a shallow wooden box holding a coil of rope, a tin cup, and a hand-drawn chart on waterproof cloth. The chart shows the near shore, several low islands, a deep-water route toward the distant gold lights, and one large blank area crossed out with three parallel strokes. The marked public route runs forward over open water toward the distant gold lights. The rocky islets to the left and dark headland to the right remain charted landmarks rather than separate maintained routes from this jetty. Every so often something large passes beneath the jetty without surfacing. The fish scatter, then return.
