Place record · #600

The gallery on the left is carpeted in a deep faded red and lined with tall windows on one side, framed landscapes and old maps on the other. The maps disagree subtly about the coastline outside. Several reading rooms open from the gallery, each furnished differently: green leather chairs and newspapers in one, low sofas and chessboards in another, narrow writing desks beneath lamps in a third. At the far end, double doors stand open into a library two stories high. The library's central aisle ends at a bay window overlooking distant mountains streaked with snow. A spiral stair climbs only to the library's own upper shelves and mezzanine bridge, while the smaller travel-book room remains part of the same library suite. None is a separate onward route. One atlas lies open on a table. The page shows a coastline resembling the one below the hotel, but the hotel itself is absent. In the margin, somebody has penciled: BETTER THIS WAY.
