The stair climbs steeply between two narrow buildings, passing open kitchen windows and balconies strung with drying herbs. At the top, the roofs flatten into terraces connected by short bridges, ladders, and stairways that make the upper district feel like another city laid over the first. Tables occupy many of the terraces. Some are crowded with friends sharing bottles and small plates. Others hold only plants, lanterns, or laundry. Music travels unpredictably across the rooftops: a flute from somewhere below, hand drums from across the river, singing from a terrace hidden behind climbing vines. A larger rooftop garden beneath hanging lanterns, a tiny observatory dome, and the river-facing terraces where paper lanterns are released are all parts of this connected rooftop district and loop back through the same terraces. They are not separate mapped branches. From up here, the district's streets form no obvious grid. Several alleys visible below appear to end beneath buildings that, from this height, clearly have courtyards beyond them.
