The quieter lane behind the market is narrow enough that awnings nearly meet overhead. The noise of the main street softens into individual sounds: a teapot lid clicking, a saw rasping through wood, a brush tapping against a ceramic rim, someone laughing behind a paper screen. Small workshops remain open late. One displays hand-bound notebooks and boxes of loose paper. Another is crowded with carved wooden toys and mechanical birds. A third contains shelves of tiny glass bottles filled with colored powders, dried leaves, metallic flakes, and things that might be spices or pigments. The tea courtyard ahead, the lantern-painting workshop to the left, and the fountain-and-bathhouse passage to the right are all parts of this same neighborhood lane and return to it; none is a separate mapped onward route. At a bookbinder's stall, a basket marked FREE contains scraps too small for full pages. One bears a fragment of printed text in plain language: IF YOU FOUND THIS STREET BY ACCIDENT, YOU DID IT CORRECTLY.
