The concourse opens into a broad public promenade beneath a high canopy of glass and suspended greenery. Tables spill from food counters into the walking space without quite blocking it. Steam rises from bowls and kettles. A baker slides flat rounds from a ceramic oven while, two stalls over, a synthetic vendor with four delicate hands assembles intricate layered snacks faster than anyone seems able to eat them. Humans and machine-bodied residents share long communal tables. Some eat; some connect slim charging leads beneath the benches; some do both sorts of lingering in company. A pair of small courier drones has abandoned all apparent urgency to watch a street musician coax harmonics from a bowed metal instrument. Nobody tells them to move along. Ahead, the promenade reaches a circular plaza where several overlapping performances are competing amicably for an audience. To the left, an arcade of food counters and tiny tea rooms curves beneath hanging gardens. To the right, public tables continue toward shops selling clothing, modular body fittings, books, toys, tools, scent cartridges, ceramics, and things whose purpose is not immediately obvious. At one table, three friends are arguing over whether a song was better before or after somebody translated it into a format one of them could actually hear. Their disagreement sounds ancient.
