Evening opens across a broad elevated concourse woven between tall buildings and open sky. The architecture is advanced without being pristine: stone-composite paving worn smooth at the centers of paths, glass balustrades carrying scratches and fingerprints, old metal handrails polished by use, climbing plants spilling from terraces above. Thin bands of light are set into the pavement and undersides of bridges rather than hung as advertisements, and quiet transit lines slide through lower levels with a soft magnetic hum.
The district is crowded, but comfortably so. Humans move among synthetic residents of many forms: humanoid bodies in ordinary clothes, compact wheeled frames carrying parcels, articulated maintenance walkers, small hovering couriers, tall narrow machines whose faces are arrangements of light rather than features. Nobody treats any of this as remarkable. A human child leans against the leg of a broad-shouldered synthetic guardian while watching trains below. Two mechanical residents argue amiably beside a noodle stall. At a repair kiosk, a woman holds a replacement panel steady while a four-legged field unit clicks it into its own shoulder housing.
There are smells of toasted grain, broth, hot ceramic, wet leaves, machine coolant, tea, ozone after rain, and something sweet being caramelized nearby. Music drifts from somewhere ahead, interrupted occasionally by the soft tones of arriving transit.
Ahead, the concourse broadens toward a lively public promenade of food counters, shops, tables, and music. To the left, workshop lights glow beneath signs for repair, fabrication, fitting, and materials. To the right, open skywalks climb toward terraces overlooking the transit lanes and the city beyond. Behind, a quieter civic interior opens through wide glass bays into reading rooms, rest spaces, galleries, and shared public halls.
Nobody welcomes you to the future. Everyone appears to be busy living in it.
