The riverside garden sits beneath trees hung with hundreds of small white lights, some wrapped around branches and others dangling low enough to sway just above head height. The ground is dark gravel broken by patches of moss, stone seats, and shallow channels carrying river water through beds of reeds. People come here to be quiet without necessarily being alone. A group of friends has spread a cloth beneath one tree and is sharing fruit from a wooden box. An older man reads by the light hanging over his shoulder. Two children are trying to count how many lights blink at exactly the same moment and disagree loudly about the result. At the garden's river edge, three stone basins collect water from a narrow spillway. The first reflects the white lights. The second reflects only darkness. The third contains the impossible full moon, perfectly centered, despite being several steps inland from the river itself. A gardener nearby is trimming herbs and either has not noticed or has decided correctly that it is none of his business.
