A shallow stair climbs from the quiet landing to a row of tea houses built shoulder to shoulder along the river wall. Their windows fold completely open at night, so the rooms become warm rectangles of wood, steam, low conversation, and shelves of cups facing the dark water. No two establishments seem to agree on furniture. One uses floor cushions and low tables. Another has narrow booths. A third has only a long counter facing the river, where patrons sit alone together. Tea comes in small pots, large pots, chipped mugs, delicate bowls, and one place that appears to serve it in squat metal flasks intended to remain hot for hours. Beside several cups sit tiny dishes of salted fruit, roasted seeds, or sweets wrapped in translucent paper. A menu board lists eight teas and then, beneath them, THE ONE YOU ALREADY ORDERED, priced exactly the same as the others. Nobody at the counter seems bothered by this.
