A low covered boat waits at the end of the landing for passengers heading beyond the last visible bridge. Its interior is lined with worn cushions and narrow shelves for baskets and parcels. Two brass lamps cast more light onto the passengers' hands than onto their faces. The boat does not leave immediately. It fills slowly with people carrying groceries, flowers, tools, folded cloth, and one very sleepy child who is already using a bundled coat as a pillow. The atmosphere is less excursion than late commute. From the mooring, downstream city lights become sparse enough that individual windows and garden lanterns stand out against long dark stretches of bank. Farther away, beyond the final bridge, a thin horizontal band of pale light sits just above the water and does not appear to belong to any building. The boatkeeper notices it, squints once, and continues tying a knot. Whatever it is can wait until another night.
