the terrace above the clock square

Broad wet steps rise between the painted houses to a stone terrace above the square. From here the unreadable clock face is nearly level with the eye, and the roofs beyond stack toward the clearing western sky. A line of iron chairs faces the view beneath a pergola stripped of leaves. One chair holds a folded newspaper gone soft from rain. The terrace ends at a parapet and two locked service doors; there is no public route onward. Descend the same steps to the square.
