The worn steps descend into canal water colder than the rain above. Four remain visible from the bridge; three more can be felt beneath the surface before the stair reaches a narrow submerged landing cut into the masonry. A sealed iron door occupies the wall there, its handle missing and its edges packed with mineral growth. Small fish shelter against it when the current strengthens. The stair goes no deeper and the door does not offer a passage. Return upward to the quay.
