Place record · #908

the low head

The basalt rib at the far end of the shingle rises only a few feet above the water, broad enough to walk without climbing. Its seaward face is dark and wet; the upper surface is rougher and dry in scattered patches where spray does not quite reach. From here the coast finally opens beyond the second bend. Instead of another immediate narrowing, the shoreline runs away in a long shallow curve. A dark strip lies between water and low grass for a considerable distance, too far from this head to tell whether it is sand, fine shingle, or both. The land behind it stays low. No buildings, smoke, paths, or other signs of settlement are visible. Behind, the loose-stone crescent and the narrower shelf can both be seen in sequence. Ahead, for the first time on this branch, the coast offers distance rather than another blind corner.
