Place record · #909

the long dark shore

Below the low head, the distant dark strip resolves into a broad mixture of coarse black sand and very fine rounded shingle. The surface is firm near the water where each wash smooths it, looser and noisier higher up where the pebbles dry. The shore runs in a shallow curve far enough that walking becomes rhythmic rather than technical. Low grass begins only beyond a narrow storm line of scattered stones and pale drift fragments. Nothing here blocks the route or asks for a decision. In midday light the wet sand carries a dull reflection of the sky without becoming mirror-bright. The water edge advances and withdraws over a wide, shallow slope. Behind, the low basalt head is already beginning to look smaller. Ahead, the curve continues toward a section of coast where the grass comes closer to the water.
