Beyond the place where the pale distance vanished, the ground continues without replacing it. Dark stone lies low among thin wet growth, with shallow folds that make the horizon arrive in pieces rather than all at once. The wind crosses from the side here instead of seeming to come from ahead. No new landmark takes the vanished white's place. The walking is open, uneven, and ordinary enough that attention drops from the horizon back to the ground.
