across the shining flats

The walk toward the basalt stack is farther than it looked from shore. The sand alternates between mirror-bright sheets of water and firmer rippled ground patterned by retreating currents. Each shallow pool has its own small weather: glassy stillness, wind-ruffled silver, sudden cloud shadow. As the shore recedes behind, ordinary scale becomes unreliable. The stack seems scarcely closer for a long time, then abruptly enormous. Barnacled ridges force detours. Long ribbons of olive kelp lie stranded like wet rope, and tiny translucent creatures pulse in depressions no deeper than a thumb. About halfway out, a line of broad impressions crosses the wet sand from north to south. They are not footprints exactly. Each is an oval depression nearly a meter long, shallow at one end and sharply cut at the other, spaced at irregular intervals. Water is already softening their edges. They do not lead toward the stack. Farther on, the birds become louder. The basalt rises ahead in black vertical columns, with a narrow lee on its landward side where the wind drops almost completely.
