in the lee of the stack

The landward side of the basalt stack forms a tall black wall that cuts the wind almost completely. After the exposed flats, the sudden quiet feels architectural. Water drips from ledges high above. The birds are mostly on the seaward face, reduced here to muffled arguments and occasional white feathers turning slowly down through the still air. At the base of the columns is a strip of coarse shell sand strewn with fragments of blue mussel and pale crab carapace. A narrow cleft splits the basalt at shoulder width. It opens only a few meters in, not into a cave, but into a vertical slot where seawater rises and falls from somewhere beneath the rock. Each pulse arrives several seconds after the sound of the outer surf. Wedged high in the cleft, far above any ordinary tide line, is a smooth branch of reddish wood thicker than an arm. It is fresh enough to retain bark. No such tree is visible anywhere on the coast. From the lee, the strange line of broad impressions can still be picked out across the flats. From here their direction is clearer: they cross the shore and continue toward a low reef to the north, exposed only because the water has withdrawn so far.
