beneath the falling water

The shore tightens beneath the cliffs until the sea-polished stones are only a few dozen paces wide. Moss hangs in dark green sheets from the rock above, interrupted by ribbons of water that descend without drama, some clear and narrow, some broken into mist before they reach the beach. Here the wind is intermittent. Between gusts, individual sounds separate: water ticking into stone basins, pebbles shifting under the wash, the dry scrape of a bird somewhere overhead. The cliff face is full of shallow recesses and darker seams. Most are only shadows. One, behind the third waterfall, seems to continue farther than the light reaches. The stones near that fall are unusually pale, almost bone-colored, and a shallow runnel leads from the cave mouth toward the sea. Nothing has been arranged. Nothing points inward. It merely remains possible to go there.
