behind the third waterfall

Passing behind the water is colder than expected. For a few steps the world is reduced to white noise and broken light; then the sound falls away and the recess opens into a shallow cavern whose ceiling slopes downward toward darkness. The floor is not dry. A clear stream no wider than a hand runs from the back of the cave toward the waterfall, cutting a shallow channel through pale stone. The walls are banded grey, green, and rust-red where minerals have seeped through them. In several places the bands form near-perfect concentric arcs, like sections through trees that never grew. Twenty meters in, daylight becomes indirect. There is enough to see that the cave forks around a broad pillar of stone. The left branch quickly narrows to nothing. The right carries the little stream and a steady current of air that smells not of sea but of wet leaves. On the pillar, at about eye level, a small patch of stone has been worn smooth by repeated contact. There is no mark on it, only the polish.
