the pale dunes

Beyond the cobble field the ground turns abruptly soft. Pale sand lifts into long low dunes striped with beach grass, their windward faces smooth and their sheltered sides stippled with tiny tracks. The sea is mostly hidden here; only its sound remains, broad and distant. Between the dunes are hollows where the air warms a little and the grass stands upright. In one of them, driftwood has gathered around a shallow basin of rainwater darkened by peat. Small yellow flowers grow close to the ground. Farther in, the dunes rise high enough that each crest reveals another set beyond it, and then another. On the third high ridge, something geometric interrupts the landscape: four weathered stone posts in a rough square, each barely knee-high, with no wall or roof between them. Lichen covers their upper surfaces. From there, a narrow line through the grass continues toward a distant stand of wind-bent trees that cannot be seen from the shore.
