among the wind-bent trees

The narrow line through the dune grass descends into a sheltered hollow where the air changes completely. The wind becomes a distant pressure above the canopy. The trees are low, old, and twisted inland, their trunks silver-grey and their branches densely furred with lichen. The ground beneath them is soft with needles and dry leaves, interrupted by patches of fine white sand. Light arrives green and broken. Somewhere deeper in the grove, water can be heard dripping at a slow regular interval despite there being no visible stream. The four stone posts on the ridge are not repeated here, but their geometry returns in another form: several trees have grown around rectangular blocks of dark stone, roots gripping corners and disappearing beneath them. The blocks are too regular to be natural and too widely scattered to suggest a wall. At the far end of the grove, one trunk has fallen across a narrow depression. Beyond it the land drops sharply, and through the branches there is a glimpse of water that cannot be the sea: too dark, too still, and apparently much closer than the coast should be from here.
