the roofs after rain

The service stair ends at a heavy metal door standing open to the night. Beyond it, the roofs spread in overlapping planes of wet tile, slate, glass, and dark metal. Chimneys breathe pale threads of smoke. Rainwater runs along copper gutters and spills from gargoyles into alleys far below. Narrow maintenance walks connect several buildings, but most routes beyond this roof are gated, chained, or obviously intended for workers with better judgment than a visitor in wet shoes. Pots of rosemary, thyme, and small citrus trees cluster wherever walls shelter them from the wind. From here the city extends much farther than the arcade implied. Domes, towers, roof gardens, narrow spires, and occasional glasshouses rise in every direction beneath a clearing sky. The clouds have begun to split in the west, revealing a band of deep indigo and, lower still, a line of impossible orange light as though sunset were occurring somewhere beyond midnight. One marked iron bridge remains open to the nearest higher roof, where a small pavilion with a copper roof shelters a telescope angled down across the city. That pavilion is the only public route onward from these roofs; every other maintenance walk is closed.
