the blue bathhouse

The bathhouse entrance is set beneath one of the copper domes, reached by a short bridge over the canal. Inside, the air turns warm and mineral-rich. Blue-white light comes from frosted glass globes and from somewhere beneath the water itself. The first hall is lined with dark wooden benches, hooks, folded towels, and shallow stone basins. Beyond it opens a chamber large enough to contain several pools separated by low arches. Steam hangs beneath the vaulted ceiling. Some pools are perfectly still; others overflow continuously through carved channels into lower basins. The stone underfoot is warm. Mosaics cover the walls in muted blue, cream, and black: waves, birds, constellations, boats, hands holding cups. One panel has been repaired with pieces that do not quite match, so that a flock of birds becomes, halfway across the wall, a set of small black stars. At the far end is an open-air pool beneath the central dome, whose oculus has no glass. Rainwater occasionally falls from the roof edge into the hot water. From the pool, the clearing night sky is visible directly overhead while the city remains hidden beyond the walls. A narrow passage marked only by three horizontal lines descends farther below the baths. Warm air rises from it in slow breaths.
