Place record · #555

at the fallen giant

The fallen redwood lies across a shallow hollow, its trunk broader than a room and its bark broken into long cinnamon-colored plates. The crown disappeared somewhere downslope long ago, but the base remains attached to a root mass that towers above the forest floor in a wall of dark soil, stone, and exposed roots. Where the trunk split on impact, the interior has weathered into a dry chamber open along one side. It smells of old wood and dust instead of damp earth. Light enters through cracks in the fractured grain, making thin gold lines across the floor. A person could sit inside without stooping. The root wall is full of pockets. Ferns grow from some; others hold stones polished smooth by soil movement. Near the lowest edge, a narrow passage continues behind the lifted roots into a cavity where the ground drops out of sight for several meters before leveling again. Nothing about the place appears arranged, but tucked into one bark fissure is a feather almost as long as a forearm: barred grey and cream, clean, unbroken, and much larger than the birds heard in the grove.
