behind the lifted roots

The narrow gap beneath the lifted root mass opens into an earth-walled cavity large enough to stand in once the initial drop levels out. Exposed redwood roots cross the ceiling like beams, holding pockets of stone and old charcoal-black wood. The floor is dry except for one shallow basin containing clear water and a scatter of tiny pale feathers. The cavity closes in packed earth and roots on every side; there is no second exit. Crawl back beneath the roots to the fallen giant.
