The colonnade behind the arrival terrace runs along the upper edge of the garden beneath a lower ceiling of warm stone. Between the columns are deep seating alcoves with curved benches, woven rugs, low tables, and shelves holding books whose spines carry no titles. Dark polished doors punctuate the inner wall. Most are closed. One stands open onto a quiet room with a long table and a ceiling painted midnight blue. Another reveals a short corridor lined with hooks and neatly folded robes. A third opens only a hand's width and emits air several degrees colder than the colonnade. The public walk continues ahead as the lamps become fewer and the architecture older: pale stone gives way to darker blocks with visible tool marks. A short staff stair to the right rises to a mezzanine overlooking the arrival terrace but is chained off at the first landing. To the left, a broad doorway opens only into one of the colonnade's own cedar-smoke seating rooms rather than a separate route. On one bench rests a small square card of thick cream paper. One side is blank. The other shows only a line drawing of the curved glass roof and, beneath it, seven small circles in a row. The fifth is marked with a dot.
