The short ladder ends inside a clear enclosure no larger than a small balcony. Glass surrounds it on every side except the floor. The single chair is fixed to the deck and faces outward toward the blue-white planet. From here, the garden below is almost entirely hidden by the curvature of the roof. The view becomes space, glass, and the enormous turning weather of the world outside. Lightning blooms silently across a storm system the size of a continent. Along the night side, faint threads of gold suggest cities or fires or something else arranged along coastlines. A narrow console beside the chair holds seven mechanical switches beneath seven indicator windows. Six windows are dark. The fifth glows a steady amber. None of the switches is labeled. Beside the console is a shallow recess containing a pair of optical lenses in a folding brass frame. Through them, the planet's night side becomes sharper. For several seconds, among the golden lines below, one tiny pattern seems unmistakably to resemble the curved roof of the garden itself. Then cloud covers it. There is nowhere else to walk from the enclosure. The only path is back down the ladder.
