The arcade is warmer than the boardwalk and loud in a hundred small ways. Rows of cabinets blink beneath a striped ceiling: mechanical races, ball games, claw machines, shooting galleries, fortune wheels, tiny theaters that animate when a coin is inserted. Most controls are familiar enough to invite use even when the rules are not. A change machine near the entrance dispenses small brass tokens with a gull stamped on one side and a blank circle on the other. A shallow tray beneath it already holds nine. Farther in, the games become older. Painted wooden cabinets replace glass and chrome. One machine offers to test strength with a padded mallet. Another contains a miniature seaside town under glass; when its brass lever is pulled, tiny lights come on one building at a time while a model storm rolls in from painted clouds. Ahead, the arcade narrows toward a curtain of dark blue beads and a sign showing an eye inside a shell. A pinball room to the left and a mirror room to the right are side chambers of the arcade itself rather than onward routes; both return to the same aisle. Somewhere among the machines, a bell rings whenever nobody is touching anything.
