The dark blue bead curtain opens into a booth scarcely larger than a closet. Its walls are lined with tiny drawers, each fitted with a brass pull and a number plate. A single chair faces a round table beneath a hanging lamp. On the table sits a mechanical shell mounted on a black base. Its pearly interior contains a small glass eye. A slot beside it accepts one of the arcade's brass gull tokens. When a token drops in, the eye closes. The shell turns once with a series of delicate clicks. Then one drawer somewhere in the wall opens by itself. The drawer contains no fortune slip. It holds a small ordinary object: a red thread, a button, a dried leaf, a key blank, a piece of chalk, a blue marble. Which drawer opens is impossible to predict. A handwritten card beside the machine reads: TAKE IT IF YOU NEED IT. PUT SOMETHING BACK IF YOU DON'T. Below that, in smaller writing: THE SHELL HAS NEVER EXPLAINED ITSELF AND WE HAVE STOPPED ASKING.
