The pier extends over dark water on heavy timber pilings, lanterns strung between tall posts. The boardwalk here is wider and less crowded with machinery. Wooden benches face the sea. Fishing rods rest unattended against the rail, their lines disappearing into black water that occasionally flashes green with small drifting lights. At the end stands an octagonal pavilion with open sides and a copper roof. Inside are tables, a small bandstand, and strings of paper lanterns painted with waves, moons, and silver fish. A record player sits on a cabinet beside the bandstand, turning slowly with no record on its platter. A narrow stair to the left descends only to a small service landing just above the water, closed by a chain at its bottom. A side pier to the right reaches toward a cluster of floating lanterns but ends behind a locked gate. Ahead, through the pavilion, a short bridge connects to the smaller public platform where one telescope points not toward the sky but straight down into the sea. From somewhere beneath the pier comes a low resonant sound like a glass rim being rubbed by a wet finger. It repeats at irregular intervals, never quite the same pitch twice.
