The short bridge ends at a circular platform barely wider than the brass telescope fixed to its center. Unlike the coin-operated instruments along the seawall, this one has no eyepiece cap, no payment slot, and no mechanism for changing direction. It points straight down between the pilings into the dark sea. Through the glass, surface reflection disappears. The water becomes transparent far beyond what ordinary depth should allow. Small green lights drift past like sparks. Schools of silver fish turn together beneath them. Lower still, the timber pilings vanish into blue-black distance. Then the bottom appears. It is not sand. A broad pale surface crosses the field of view, curved and marked by long parallel grooves. At first it resembles stone. Then a line of darker circles passes beneath the lens at perfectly even intervals, each one wider than the telescope's entire view. Whatever the structure is, the pier has been built directly above it. Scratched into the brass housing are four words in plain block letters: DO NOT DROP COINS HERE.
