Past the stone pavilion, the promenade leaves the brightest part of the boardwalk behind. The lamps stand farther apart. Wind-bent grass grows between the paving stones and the seawall lowers until the dark water is visible without leaning over it. The line of low houses begins here: narrow fronts painted cream, blue, and faded yellow, each with a tiny porch facing the sea. Most windows are dark. One porch light burns above an empty rocking chair. Another house has a radio playing softly somewhere inside, too muffled to make out words. Farther ahead, the promenade ends at a broad grassy point overlooking the water. A wooden bench sits there beneath no lamp at all. As the last boardwalk lights behind finally click off in sequence, the sky seems to brighten by comparison. The sea answers a moment later. Pale green bands appear beneath the surface, first near shore and then farther out, curving through the darkness like slow handwriting. From the bench, the pattern is larger than it looked from the wheel. Several lines converge offshore around a single dark patch where no light passes at all. Nothing arrives. Nothing emerges. The show is simply there, and then, after several minutes, it fades.
