The blue-lantern steps rise into a cluster of connected courtyards beneath low tiled roofs. This is not a temple complex so much as a neighborhood that has borrowed temple architecture for ordinary evening life. Tea rooms open directly onto stone paving. Flower sellers work from shallow alcoves. Musicians sit on cushions beneath carved beams while people come and go carrying parcels, cups, and folded umbrellas. At the largest courtyard, a shallow basin reflects the blue lanterns overhead. People stop at its edge to wash their hands, cool their wrists, or float single petals across the surface. The two mechanical birds from the river rail have followed uphill and are now stalking a dropped sesame seed with absurd seriousness. A long communal table occupies one side beneath a vine-covered trellis. Several seats remain empty. Nobody appears to be saving them. The river is visible again through an opening in the roofs, and its moon remains stubbornly present in the water below.
