A narrow wooden boat slips away from the quay with barely a sound beyond the knock of water against its hull. Lanterns from the market stretch into long broken ribbons behind you. Midstream, the city seems to separate into layers: warm gold and red on the bank you left, cooler blue light gathering ahead, and between them a broad dark surface carrying the impossible reflection of a full moon. The boatkeeper does not row in the ordinary sense. A long steering oar rests beneath one hand while the current appears to do most of the work. Halfway across, several floating lanterns drift past in the opposite direction. One goes dark as it passes beneath the boat and relights a few seconds later downstream. The opposite landing rises in shallow stone steps beneath a line of blue lanterns. Above them stands a low temple-like roof attached to a cluster of courtyards, tea rooms, and covered walkways rather than a single monumental building. People come and go carrying cups, wrapped parcels, small instruments, and baskets of flowers. Two synthetic-looking mechanical birds—whether toys, pets, or something else is unclear—hop along the railing pecking at droplets of wax. Ahead, the steps climb beneath the blue lanterns into the courtyard district. To the left, a covered walk follows the river under carved eaves toward a quieter garden. To the right, another landing serves small late boats heading farther along the opposite bank. As the boat touches stone, the old boatkeeper taps the gunwale twice, points at the moon in the water, and then points at the empty sky again. This time he does not laugh.
